Xenakis’ Sieve Theory

چکیده

Iannis Xenakis sternly criticized serial music in the mid-fifties. In response, he proposed and developed a set of compositional procedures which were mainly based on probabilistic laws that framed under principle indeterminism. The sieve theory sixties represented return to deterministic strategies for composing. Following examination Xenakis’ notes sketches from period spanning his time auditing Messiaen’s classes composition Nomos Alpha , I argue is better understood when viewed through lens personal earlier speculations twelve-tone techniques.

Some steps in sieve theory

(1) We have μ(1) = 1. This function...

Sieve Equivalence in Generalized Partition Theory

The sieve method (principle of inclusion-exclusion) is one of the most powerful tools of combinatorics. Given a set a of objects and a list 9 of properties of those objects, we determine the number N(Y; 2s) of objects in Q whose set of properties contains (those in 9 that are indexed by) the set S. We are then able to find the number of objects that have no properties, exactly k properties, etc...

Creativity Through Technology And Science In Xenakis

Nowadays it is common for creativity to be linked to technological advancement and there is a widely held impression that new ideas and concepts emerge daily as a result of technology. However, technology and even science and progress are often criticized leading towards a tendency for simplification and more human and natural consideration of reality. This issue is much discussed in music and ...

Sieve Methods in Group Theory I: Powers in Linear Groups

The sieve method is a classic one in number theory (see, for example, [FI]). Recently it found some applications in a non-commutative setting. On the one hand, Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak [BGS1] applied it in studying almost-prime vectors in orbits of non-commutative groups acting on Z. On the other hand, Rivin [Ri] and Kowalski [Ko] used it to study generic properties of elements in the mapping cl...

Restriction Theory of the Selberg Sieve, with Applications

The Selberg sieve provides majorants for certain arithmetic sequences, such as the primes and the twin primes. We prove an L–L restriction theorem for majorants of this type. An immediate application is to the estimation of exponential sums over prime k-tuples. Let a1, . . . , ak and b1, . . . , bk be positive integers. Write h(θ) := ∑ n∈X e(nθ), where X is the set of all n 6 N such that the nu...
